I’ve worked with Jay Miller for five years on his talk show, Midevenings. Recently, Jay made the transition to directing music videos. His first was a music video for the band The Front Bottoms. Next up was a video for his friend Kevin Devine, who released two new albums earlier in the year. I had the pleasure of already working with Kevin and Jay on a parody music video for Jay’s show (featured here on my Camera Work page). Jay was asked to direct a video for his song, “Little Bulldozer”. Jay had a Director of Photography for the shoot, but he was unavailable for a few hours. Jay asked me to step in and help finish shooting the video. I ended up shooting the final thirty seconds of the video, including one short shot of some feet.

It was my first time working with a RED Epic camera. This camera has been around for a few years, but it’s a high-end digital cinema camera that’s very light compared to most cameras of its caliber, and it capable of up to 4.5K resolution. It also felt a bit like shooting on a DSLR because of the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens on the front. I was a little intimidated by it at first, but its operation was a lot more “point and click” that I thought it would be. A very good experience overall and I would not be intimidated to use it again.
Capturing a Living Philosopher
It’s been a while since I have updated, but I wanted to talk about a gig I had last Fall that I probably should’ve already talked about. Back in 2012, I was hired by The One Club to webcast panels for a career fair called “Where Are All The Black People?”, Of which I posted about here. Last year, I was hired again to webcast the panels for the annual event, this time entitled “Here Are All The Black People.” The Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Cornel West. When you think of the word “philosopher”, you usually think of an old man with a beard that’s long gone and only know of him by his texts. It’s rare that you actually get to see a living, breathing, genuine philosopher right before your eyes. On the day of that conference, I saw one, and I had the privilege of capturing him on video. Below is his speech in three parts.

A Very Special Holiday Webcast
Tonight, I will be directing a live webcast for Comedy/Talk Show Midevenings with Jay Miller. I have worked on this show for the past three and a half years, and it is one of my favorite projects. I will be running two cameras into a video switcher, then encoding it to Ustream via my laptop. We go live at 9PM Eastern Time. You can watch the stream right here, or on the official Midevenings website, where there will be a live chat room in place. If you missed it, the show will be on YouTube next week. Happy Holidays!
A Live Webcast for The One Club
I was hired by a non-profit organization called The One Club, which specializes in promoting creatives in the advertising industry. They held a career fair called “Where Are All The Black People?”. The purpose of this fair was to promote minorities in advertising. There were five presentations that we streamed live to YouTube. I also ran the camera, was responsible for monitoring the audio levels fed from the soundboard and inserted live graphics. The first presentation was a keynote panel. The second was a talent pitch, where young, up-and-coming creatives presented their works, mostly through PowerPoint-style presentations. The third was a panel of advertising pros giving their opinions on working with creatives. The fourth was a two person panel on how to market one’s self as an advertising creative. The final panel of the day, which was my favorite, was called, “My First Time”, where some prominent creatives talked about how they got started. This was a fun gig and I hope to run more live webcasts in the future.
Audio Mixing
I was asked to mix audio for a TV show called Raw Music. This is a show where musicians are interviewed and perform songs. I have mixed bands live and the director thought I would be a good fit. The first in-studio episode came out pretty great.
